Bihar announced New Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy for Maoists

The Bihar government on 3 December 2013 approved a new surrender and rehabilitation policy for Maoists in the state. The policy was approved in a Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The new surrender policy aimed to convince the Naxals to put down arms and lead a normal life and bring youths to the mainstream of society.

The move comes after seven policemen were killed in a land mine blast by the Maoists in Aurangabad district of the state on 3 December 2013.

New Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy

• According to the new policy 2.5 lakh rupees would be given for state, regional, central committees and to politbureau members of Maoists who surrender under the new policy. The amount would be deposited in bank and would be given after three years of surrender.
• An additional amount would be provided to those surrendering with arms and explosives, based on their weight.
• Under the earlier 2001 policy, 10000 Rupees was given as immediate assistance for surrender and 3000 rupees per month for rehabilitation.
